The Challenges of Educational Publishing:
Delivering Reliable Value in a Changing Learning Environment
This panel discussion examines the challenges and opportunities faced by academic publishers today. Both the university presses and the more diversified mainstream publishers must develop strategies to adjust to a dramatically altered higher education environment.
Factors to be considered by publishers include shorter term lengths; online and blended delivery formats for courses; part-time, working-adult, and career-oriented learners; and new kinds of institutions, including multi-campus, international, and for-profit systems.
As a consequence, e-books and other digitally formatted content have generally become more important. Customization or more focused design of texts to fit institutional goals and strategies has expanded.
Shaping of texts and materials to fit shorter terms and busier adult students has increased. Amid these changes, the need to keep costs down has remained a constant priority.
Among the tools for meeting these challenges are the print technologies for on-demand and just-in-time modes, which support the desire for more customization and individualizing of materials, and lead us away from the large print runs of standard, comprehensive, expensive hard-cover texts.
Participants will include, DeVry University Press, Pearson Publishing and Flatworld Publishing.
